M. R. SellarsIn the past I’ve waxed poetic about BLAM (Blog Spam) that shows up in my filter. Rather than bore you with all of that biz yet again, I’m simply going to share with you some of my recent favorites.
Email addresses, IP’s, and weblinks have been removed. Not to protect anyone. I just don’t want the idiots getting a backlink from me and showing up higher in the search engines…

Do you get the emails from distant lands that tell you that the powers that be are going to take all your long lost relatives money if you do not help them get it out of their country??? LOL Half the time they sound just like the one you posted where you know that the person sending it is not an English speaker yet they want you to trust them to give you your Banking info and other personal info. You will get one third of the money (often in the millions) and all you have to do is lie to lots of government officials. Yeah like that is going to happen… Mine get forwarded to the Attorney Generals office. Nothing is ever done but I feel better. But they are fun to read.

I get the creepy watch selling people the most. It always reminds me of the electronic version of the guy on a street corner who has allegedly expensive watches lining the inside of coat.
So may question is: Does any of this work? It’s hard to believe that it does and yet, my inbox and website filters are working overtime.

Well, the thing about all this is that these are spam BLOG COMMENTS that are getting caught by the WordPress spam filter (which is pretty damn good)… Of course, I also have comments set to moderated, so even when it misses one or two, they don’t get posted because I have to read them first.
My email gets hammered constantly – watches, breast enlargement, penis enlargement, russian brides, you name it…

Does it work? Apparently so. And sadly so. It costs nothing to send email, so these scammers can send these things to millions of recipients. How many responses does it take to turn a profit? One, really, but I’m sure they get more than that. Savvy users ignore or filter these things of course, the unwary, like my mother, in her 70’s, got an email supposedly from a friend promising a free iPad. It turned out, of course, to be from a scammer that had mined the friend’s contacts list for email addys. The scam,’as we all know, gets you to sign up for three “offers” in exchange for the free item. I’m sure some of the folks who complete the offers do recieve the item, but far more are assaulted by continued spam attacks from the retailers involved.
